“You crazy white person!” I yelled to my boyfriend as he got dressed a few days ago.

Despite the fact that it was oh, 48°F (8°C) outside he decided to wear shorts. I hate to revert to cultural stereotypes, but what is it about some white dudes that make them wear shorts and sandals in cold weather?

“Huh? You’re calling me crazy? Pot. Kettle. Black.” He pointed at me and laughed to himself as I he made the funniest pun ever. “Get it? Black.” He reiterated.

“Why are you wearing shorts? “ I asked while putting on my winter coat.

He shrugged, “It’s not really that cold outside.”

Quandary: Should I have told my boyfriend he looks frigging ridiculous in shorts this time of year or should I just keep quiet?

At least he had enough sense not to wear sandals. But when I lived in NYC I’d see this thing ALL THE TIME.

In New York City as soon as the weather turns from OMG-Freezing to about 45°F (7°C), which is usually some time in March, white men all over the city start wearing shorts and sandals. What’s up with that? You can’t go two blocks without seeing pairs of pasty un-tanned legs walking about.

Why do some people wear clothes that defy the weather? When women that do that, I call them hookers. You know, those scantily clad ‘babes’ that hang out along side the West Side Highway. No coat, low-cut top and tacky high heels.

I know it's a little weird for my boyfriend that I feel cold most of the time. He has to endure me constantly turning up the heat, stealing the covers and have cold feet in bed. I understand that's weird. And maybe because I'm a black woman I favour warmer climates.

But why do men wear shorts when it’s cold outside? I don’t get it. Is it a white thing? I know, cultural stereotypes are bad. I've just never seen any black, Asian, Indian, Inuit, Hispanic or Pacific Islanders wearing shorts when in winter. It's always white men.

Can someone please enlighten me? White dudes, speak up now!

oh girl.
my apartment is rarely below 23ºC, I love wearing shirts at home. when I go out (in amsterdam) sometimes it's below zero, and even when it's not, I don't dare to wear shorts unless it's at least 24ºC.
sandals... I'd rather cut my feet off.
I wear flip-flops but JUST AT HOME.
let's go to scantly dressed ladies which I see in london all the time when it's 5º.
what the **** is wrong with them?
they make ME feel cold.
I can understand you want to throw your stuff out in the hope of getting looked at, but is it worth spending the week after on cold pills?

I think we should, on this occasion, give into the stereotypes. Any man whose shared a few showers with women will tend to notice they like the water a little warmer than they would prefer - even painfully warmer so it could be as simple as that, but that would mean that you would see just as many black guys out in the shorts too.

So the other possibility is that you DO see that, but untanned super light pink legs are more easily noticed, especially in an urban environment.

And finally, the cultural stereotype, is it not possible (and I say this, I promise, without trying to sound like some hateful BNP oik justifying their position) that your ancestral physiology is more inclined towards warmer temperatures and your boyfriend's towards colder.

Take some of the more celtic white folks - pale, red haired, freckled. Fine in colder weather but in the sun they basically die, and then turn into a mass of skin flakes.

Hopefully none of that sounds particularly racist, I just figured that while we were in the discussion area it was a worthwhile place to go.

It's because we are not pussies!
That's what I have seen anyway.
I usually see black kids walk in from the cold wearing 4 layers of clothes & down jackets or coats.
They shake & whine like they have been in an ice truck for hours.
No racism intended of course, just call it as I see it.

I feel much better about my comment having read MarkyMac's one.

Black guys have always had better fashion sense, better wardrobes. (And gay men, too.) You'll almost never find a sharp dressed man out of style for season, he wouldn't allow himself to do such a thing.

Me? Different story. It's gonna be cold outside today - but I spend most of my time indoors, in crowded rooms with bad ventilation. The shorts fail for the short period outside by prevail for the long hours inside.

The real reason is I'm too lazy to go buy some pants that fit.

I think most people who dress unseasonally are probaly tring to get their wear out of this years wardrobe because it will be out of fashion next year. lol

Equally you could also ask why girls were wearing sheepskin ugg boots in the middle of summer. Is this a British thing?

I don't like stereotypes either - but ... Whispers: I think it's a "white thing". Oh lord forgive me! But - just as you, I've never seen any other race with shorts on while it's dang near freezing. Anywho, funny post.

Ech... I think it's mostly a being-brought-up thing.

I'm a guy and I can't stand being cold. I wear a thick oatmeal jumper when I'm outside and I don't really like my legs, so I don't wear shorts often. But then again, I wore them all the time when holidaying in France (much further away from the Arctic Circle than here in London).

I've been born and bred in a house with central heating that's on pretty much ALL THE TIME. I'm used to being toasty warm - helps me feel safe and sound - and I can't really go outside, even on a mild day, without feeling a slight nip.

In response to waxaddict's comment, I agree with the confusion over the ladies in London - there were plenty heading to the Durex party in Soho that I saw last night (I wore a V-neck jumper over my shirt), what the fuck? But in northern towns, even closer to the Arctic Circle, they wear even less! That's not brave... that's INSANITY!

So, no, it's not a guy thing, or a white thing. White guy here who needs to be warm so much so that while typing he's got his foot resting on his computer's power cord (the block bit is warm). It's just up to what the individual person prefers, or wants to appear to prefer...

...however idiotic that may actually be.

[Verification letters on this occasion spelled a word: "ableness"]

Yeah, I don't give into negative cultural stereotypes (for all you lovely racists- of all colors- out there), but white people not being as scared of the cold is genetic. White people generally have lived in colder climate, hence the lack of melanin.

Black soldiers in WWII (or one of those wars; I am obviously not a historian) were believed to be slacking when they were in cold climates. Just turns out that black people (like me) ain't having it when it comes to winter!

Damn, am I the ONLY sex blogger that didn't get invited to the Durex party?

Thanks for all your comments, everyone!

I love this blog, and I love that we can discuss the otherwise undiscussable (is that even a word?) here without offending anyone...
I think its just white guys, we have that here in Oz too! African, Indian and Arab immigrants wear longs while our local whites and Asians wear shorts.. If you work it out, let me know.

Mountain people are a special breed. I grew up at 8,000 ft. and 48 degrees is definitely still shorts weather.

If it makes you feel better, a lot of the sex bloggers who got nvited to the Durex party didn't go. As far as I'm aware, I was the only one!
